Career expert Tory Johnson appeared on Good Morning America this morning to discuss getting a job during the holidays. She recommends that people start looking for a job now if they want to work during the Christmas season. So far, 62% of retailers have had more seasonal applicants than last year, but 40% say they expect to hire fewer people this year, according to Hay Group, a consulting firm. Some companies are even offering their existing staff the option of working more hours, which could cut into the number of seasonal workers hired.
Among the companies you can target for season work are retailers, security firms and package handlers. But Johnson also suggests going the entrepreneurial route and offering your services as a pet sitter, concierge, or anything else you can think of. Perhaps folks in your neighborhood would be willing to pay you to put up Christmas decorations.
Whatever you do, get moving. The competition for jobs this holiday season is expected to be fierce.
